Children's ideas about food webs in ecosystems
Keywords: ecology concepts, ecosystems, informal learning, research method
Language of article: slovak
Several ways can be used for gathering children's knowledge. We used the method of children's drawing of four different ecosystems and analyses of children's understanding of food webs in these ecosystems to evaluate differences in children's understanding estimated by these two different methods. Moreover, we examined short-term effects informal learning in the field on understanding of some ecology concepts. We found out that data obtained from drawings were not related to scores from food webs and food webs seem to be more reliable for estimation children's understanding. However, detailed scoring of abiotic and biotic factors drawn in each ecosystem provided valuable data and thus this method can be recommended for further comparative studies. Short-term effect of informal education in the field resulted in better understanding of ecology.
